I woke this morning to find that some tech gremlins had absconded with my website – so here’s a very hasty substitute until I can lure them back.
My background is in dance, initially as a producer but increasingly as a photographer as well; from the beginning, I usually worked closely with artists and companies, and although I do often attend press photocalls, I really appreciate being part of the company / furniture when working with artists.
One of my first jobs was with LAMDA, a leading drama school in London, and they’d tell me “We usually hire X to shoot our shows, but he goes away straight afterwards, while you stay here with us and you chat with us while you edit.”
Outside of photography, I have long highlighted and raised awareness of the precarious financial circumstances of independent (freelance) artists, and campaigned against profiteering of artists, especially during Edinburgh Fringe.
If you combine these two avenues, I love working directly with artists and companies, but – having spent years analysing and crunching public arts funding – I usually prefer working according to client budgets instead of set fees. I don’t agree that artists should receive lesser work just because they can’t afford to pay more.
I adore the visual nature of performing arts, and that’s what attracts me to the images I capture, especially with the physicality of movement-based work.
I don’t only shoot dance, of course, while I also cover protests – and I’m really interested in shooting food. As you do.
I’m based in Edinburgh and Brighton, which makes it very easy to travel for work. Do say hello if you’re interested!
